Posted on September 18, 2018
WeHeartBeat is cooking up something special for Fak’ugesi Festival, Johannesburg’s annual digital innovation festival. This educational program-meets-festival harbors in creativity of all kinds. Sitting at the intersection of art, culture, technology, and innovation, Fak’ugesi is truly one of a kind.
This year, the festival’s theme is “Tap Your Afro Source Code,” which will celebrate African visions of technology, African tradition and culture as they intersect with technology and creativity.

WeHeartBeat is the music agency at the heart of the festival. Founded by Dominique Soma and Sims Phakisi, WeHeartBeat is passionate about pushing out new, alternative sounds within the well-established electronic beat space in Joburg’s nightlife. As the first of its kind in South Africa, WeHeartBeat has thrived by tapping into Africa’s bursting creative sphere. This authentic, groundbreaking agency has worked with artists and groups such as Masego, Kojey Radical, the Whooligan, Mellow Orange and more.
At the last Fak’ugesi Festival in September, WeHeartBeat hosted the successful Bloc Party, a showcase of underground talent. Working with the Fak’ugesi 2018 theme this year, WeHeartBeat hosted Beats Lab, a 5-day collaborative project that examines the theme of courage through music, photography, film, and performance art. Bonj Mpanza, S Fidelity, Zikomo, Hlasko, Potatohead People, and Morena Leraba are some of the artists who participated in the Beats Lab project.
Next weekend, WeHeartBeat will host another Bloc Party. Beats Lab participants and other local artists will come back on stage to perform in front of the largest crowd of the festival.
