Sylvia Rhone Named CEO of Epic Records

On Tuesday April 23rd, Rob Stringer, CEO of Sony Music Entertainment, announced the promotion of Sylvia Rhone from President to Chairman and CEO of Epic Records. In her new role, Rhone will pioneer the overall creative direction and management of the company. Additionally, Rhone will oversee artists such as Travis Scott, Camila Cabello, Mariah Carey, and 21 Savage.

In making the announcement Stringer said of Rhone, “Sylvia is a trailblazing and iconic executive who has played a critical leadership role in driving Epic’s recent artist development success. Her wealth of experience and passionate support of artistic vision will help us further grow the reach of Epic’s roster around the world.”

In regards to her promotion, Rhone stated, “I am excited to continue my amazing journey at Epic Records supported by Rob Stringer’s vision and leadership…Everything we do is a testament to our incredible artists who set the bar of the entire Epic culture, inspiring our dedicated executive team every day and enriching the legacy of this great label.”

Rhone has an extensive background in the music industry. Having began her career at Buddah Records in 1974, she has since held senior positions at many leading record labels. Rhone became the first African American woman to hold the position of Chairman at a major record company in 1994 when she became Chairman of Warner Music Group’s Elektra Entertainment Group, a position she held until 2004. She then became President of Universal Motown Records and Executive Vice President at Universal Records. Following her time at Universal Music Group, Rhone landed at Sony Music where she had been President since 2014.
