Producer, DJ, Advocate: Nightwave and Her EP “Sanctuary”

by Bobbi Giel

Maya Medvesek, better known by her stage name Nightwave, is a DJ and producer from Glasgow, Scotland. Though she is known for high-powered and energizing beats fit for a club scene, her music has been called “genre-defying;” she has a tendency to release tracks that are impossible to categorize, but always display the standard of talent and innovation she is known for. Her most recent EP, “Sanctuary,” was released in February on Fool’s Gold Records. The record features pumping beats and mesmerizing vocals fit for any dance floor, with four new tracks that each deliver the energy and versatility of her production style.

Outside of the recording studio, Nightwave has made a name for herself as a club promoter and internationally renowned DJ. In addition to running her own club Nightrave in her native Glasgow, Nightwave performs at clubs around Europe, filling her venues with capitivating blends of music that range from hip hop and R&B to dancehall, house, and techno. She also runs her own record label, Heka Trax.

When speaking about her relationship with her work, Nightwave calls clubbing a “spiritual experience.” “It’s a way of connecting, of liberating yourself,” she says in a 2016 interview with BBC. “I really believe in the power of music and frequency as a healer, and I really think that music in itself is healing to our bodies and our minds.”

Nightwave also considers herself a strong proponent for gender equity in the music industry. She regularly runs DJ and producing workshops for young girls, aimed at empowering and encouraging them pursue careers in music. She is also a co-founder of Producergirls, a music production workshop for women that operates all over the U.K.
